    While there are variations in the specific application and purpose of CNC depending on the machine type, there is a common ground when it comes to the benefits that CNC programming provides. This article presents the array of benefits that CNC equipment provides as a way of establishing the framework by which CNC programming can be described.

    The major benefit that CNC programming provides is enhanced automation. Through the CNC programming, the operator participation that is required in the production of the work pieces can be minimized or even eliminated. There are even CNC programs that run without any human intervention for the entire cycle of the machining process. This setup will allow the operator to focus his attention on other things. This major benefit that CNC programming provides is coupled with secondary benefits. These include reduced operator fatigue, less mistakes attributed to human error and predictable and consistent machining operation for every work piece. Since the operation is fully automated and run with CNC program, skill level requirements for operators will not be that stringent.

    Another major benefit that one can get from CNC programming is accuracy and consistency in the work pieces produced. Machines that run on CNC programs perform at high level of consistency and accuracy. One can also depend on the repeatability specifications that the machines provide. This means that once the program has been set up, you can expect endless number of work pieces produced with high level of consistency and precision.

    Another benefit that we can get from CNC programming is flexibility in the machine tools that we use in producing the work pieces. Since these machines run on specific CNC programs, producing the different types of work pieces will only require the utilization of the appropriate program with the same machine used in producing other types of work pieces. This means that with CNC programs, we are able to undertake fast change-overs and meet tight production schedules.

    The basic function of machines that run on CNC program is consistent, automatic and precise motion control. Instead of resorting to the application of mechanical tools to activate the motion as required by most traditional machine tools, the CNC machines provides motion control in an innovative manner. These CNC machines have at least two motion directions which are referred to as axes. These axes can be automatically and precisely placed along the travel lengths. The most common types of axis are the rotary and the linear axis.
